{"id":4397,"date":"2015-11-02T17:21:24","date_gmt":"2015-11-02T16:21:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.olivierotoscanistudio.com\/?p=4397"},"modified":"2015-11-02T17:21:24","modified_gmt":"2015-11-02T16:21:24","slug":"oliviero-toscani-sets-book-womens-wear-dailywwd-02-11-2015","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.olivierotoscanistudio.com\/?p=4397","title":{"rendered":"Oliviero Toscani Sets Book (Women\u2019s Wear Daily[WWD] \/ 02.11.2015)"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"clippable-10271979\" class=\"clippable image-wrapper\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wwd.com\/fashion-news\/fashion-scoops\/gallery\/oliviero-toscani-book-benetton-campaigns-10271965-10271965\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"attachment-landscape-large\" src=\"https:\/\/pmcwwd.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/11\/c2a9oliviero_toscani_suora-e-prete.jpg?w=640&amp;h=427&amp;crop=1\" alt=\"United Colors of Benetton, 1992\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"slideshow-launch desktop\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/wwd.com\/fashion-news\/fashion-scoops\/gallery\/oliviero-toscani-book-benetton-campaigns-10271965-10271965\/\">VIEW SLIDESHOW<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>\/United Colors of Benetton, 1992,\u00a0Oliviero Toscani<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>MAVERICK EYE:<\/strong> Oliviero Toscani has been in the business for over 50 years and shook up one or two things along the way \u2014 think of his Benetton ad depicting a sensual kiss between a nun and a priest, or his shock images for a series of campaigns that featured subjects ranging from racism to AIDS and anorexia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOliviero Toscani: More Than Fifty Years of Magnificent Failures,\u201d a coffee table book scheduled to be published Nov. 5 in the U.K., explores his controversial approach to photography as a medium for sending provocative messages.<\/p>\n<p>Why \u201cfailures\u201d? \u201cBecause the great performances were always magnificent failures,\u201d he told WWD, citing Che Guevara, Communism and utopias.<\/p>\n<p>The book includes Toscani\u2019s numerous advertising campaigns, particularly his work with Benetton from 1982 to 2000, which occasionally provoked lawsuits and boycotts, in addition to editorial work appearing in Vogue, Vanity Fair and Elle.<\/p>\n<p>It has comments from colleagues, friends and scholars including <a id=\"auto-tag_kenzo-2\" href=\"http:\/\/wwd.com\/tag\/kenzo-2\/\" data-tag=\"kenzo-2\">Kenzo<\/a> Takada, <a id=\"auto-tag_issey-miyake\" href=\"http:\/\/wwd.com\/tag\/issey-miyake\/\" data-tag=\"issey-miyake\">Issey Miyake<\/a>, Philippe Starck, Peter Gabriel, Luciano Benetton, Peter Lindbergh, David Bailey, Rankin, In\u00e8s de la Fressange and Andr\u00e9 Leon Talley.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI always envied the striking freedom in Oliviero\u2019s photographs: His art has a strong moral impact, breaking down barriers and challenging generally held opinions. His work always goes beyond what is considered casual; the high quality of craftsmanship is impressive,\u201d Takada said.<\/p>\n<p>The book ends with a speech Toscani gave at the Art Directors Club in New York and at the London-based association for creative advertising and design D&amp;AD.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCreativity requires a state of non control, of limitless courage and that is why conformism is creativity\u2019s worst enemy. Anyone who doesn\u2019t have the courage to take risks, cannot be creative,\u201d he told the audience.<\/p>\n<p>The book is priced at 35 pounds, or $60 at current exchange.
