(Alamy)<\/sup><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fifthPar\">\n<p>In 2014, Dr Ros Altmann, the pensions expert and campaigner, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/politics\/conservative\/11234376\/Ban-elderly-roadsides-that-makes-employers-think-older-people-are-disabled-government-tsar-says.html\" target=\"_blank\">called the signs redundant and called for them to be banned<\/a><\/strong>. &#8220;I think we do not need a sign to warn people of older people,&#8221; she said. &#8220;It is redundant. I don&#8217;t think they are serving any useful purpose and they are damaging.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"body\">\n<p>&#8220;The signs give the message that old people are frail and disabled &#8211; it contributes to the some of the age discrimination that we know exists in society.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Anna James, founder of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.springchicken.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Spring Chicken<\/a><\/strong>, which specialises in selling gadgets designed to make life easier for older people, is hoping to change that.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/women\/womens-business\/10870006\/Giving-up-your-job-Caring-for-my-sick-dad-made-me-reinvent-my-career.html\" target=\"_blank\">Caring for my sick dad helped me reinvent my life<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>James has teamed up with brand and communications company <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbstudio.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">NB Studio Sign<\/a><\/strong> to launch the &#8216;Sign of the Times&#8217; campaign to change the image of ageing.<\/p>\n<p><sup><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i.telegraph.co.uk\/multimedia\/archive\/03312\/signembed1_3312739b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"346\" name=\"signembed1\" \/><\/sup><br \/>\n<sup>Some suggestions for the &#8216;Sign of the Times&#8217; campaign (Alan Dye, George Hardy, Andrew Altman)<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The campaign asked designers to reinvent the current &#8220;elderly crossing&#8221; sign to &#8220;do justice to the fantastic creativity, energy, curiousity and sheer vim of the older people that we meet&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/goodlife\/11605548\/The-day-I-left-my-son-with-a-perfect-stranger.html\" target=\"_blank\">The day I left my son with a perfect stranger<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Today&#8217;s older adults don&#8217;t think of themselves as old and infirm,&#8221; James said. &#8220;I think there is a way to represent the need for drivers to slow down without suggesting that life is over for older people.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We want to change the image of ageing and bring some wit and humour, and a more accurate reflection of older people, to these signs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><sup><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i.telegraph.co.uk\/multimedia\/archive\/03313\/margaretcalvert_3313094b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"268\" name=\"margaretcalvert\" \/><\/sup><\/p>\n<p><sup>Margaret Calvert&#8217;s original &#8216;children crossing&#8217; road sign, and her new &#8216;elderly crossing&#8217; road sign<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>More than 70 designers submitted new signs, including Margaret Calvert, the typographer and graphic designer, who created many of the road signs used throughout the UK.<\/p>\n<p>Calvert designed the &#8220;children crossing&#8221; road sign using herself and her younger brother as the inspiration. Her new design is thought to draw from the same inspiration and reads &#8220;After Margaret Calvert &#8211; 50 years on&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i.telegraph.co.uk\/multimedia\/archive\/03313\/signembed4_3313128b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"190\" name=\"signembed4\" \/><br \/>\n<sup>Some suggestions for the &#8216;Sign of the Times&#8217; campaign (John Bateson, Oliviero Toscani, Purpose)<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The man behind some of the most controversial <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/fashion.telegraph.co.uk\/galleries\/TMG8895895\/4\/Controversial-Benetton-ads-in-pictures.html\" target=\"_blank\">Benneton ad campaigns<\/a><\/strong>, Oliviero Toscani, also contributed a design to the campaign. Toscani&#8217;s sign depicts the famous image of The Beatles crossing Abbey Road, which James thinks is very fitting.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The iconic figures of back then are now in their 70s, and that&#8217;s the point of this campaign,&#8221; she said. &#8220;People have to change their perception of what growing older is.
